Sporting Mouthguards and Nightguards are two of the most common dental guards used in day-to-day life, to protect your teeth from dental injury, trauma or wear.

Sports mouthguards are an essential piece of equipment for anyone involved in sports that involve body contact, potential of flying equipment, or pose any risk of falling. Sports include Australian rules football, soccer, rugby, hockey, biking, skateboarding, baseball or basketball.

Mouthguards cover the upper teeth, and are designed to relieve the stress on the front teeth in the event of a collision. The shock energy is absorbed and dispersed by the mouth guard, thereby preventing broken teeth, a fractured jaw, cut lips, and concussion.

Custom Made Mouthguards – Dentist Approved

Adelaide Hills Family Dental provides professional custom made mouthguards which are individually made by a dental professional by taking an impression of your teeth and jaw. This is done to ensure the best possible fit for increased protection. Custom fitted sports mouthguards may also vary in thickness depending on age and the type of sport it will be used with.

A custom mouthguard is a perfect fit to your mouth, allows you to talk freely, and does not interfere with your breathing. In contrast, the use of ‘over the counter’ alternatives, including boil-and-bite mouthguards is generally discouraged. Over the counter mouthguards may not as be effective as they can be loosely fitted, impede speech and breathing, and can be dislodged with significant trauma.

A nightguard or sleep splint is recommended for patients who have an active habit of grinding or clenching in their sleep.

Wearing a nightguard aids in reducing wear to your teeth, minimising headaches and jaw aches, and improves sleeping habits.

Your nightguard will be fabricated to fit the exact dimensions of your teeth, as designed by a dental laboratory technician.

How Long Do They last?

Custom sports mouthguards do not lose their shape like store bought mouthguards tend to. If properly cared for, a custom mouthguard can last for years before it needs replacing. This is subject to varying levels of wear and tear or whether or not there have been significant changes to your teeth. It’s recommended that you bring your mouthguard with you to each dental check-up. Your dentist can check it fits properly and has not sustained any damage.

Mouthguard Care

In order to keep your custom-fitted mouthguard in working order, it is recommended that you keep it out of the sun, wash it in cold water after use, and keep it in its plastic case. Cleaning with a toothbrush and toothpaste is NOT recommended, as this can break down the material or cause scratches and tears. Similarly, chewing on the mouthguard can create rips and tears in the material that can allow bacteria to get in.
